Nominal masses calculated from each bar's nominal diameter at 7,850 kg/m³. Printed tables can differ in the third decimal place through rounding, and delivered bars vary within the rolling tolerance IS 1786 allows.

S-03/READING THE SIZESIS 1786

How IS 1786 bars are specified

IS 1786 is the Indian Standard for high strength deformed steel bars used to reinforce concrete. It is the bar called up on almost every Indian drawing and tender, usually as Fe 500 or Fe 500D TMT bars.

Indian drawings and BOQs give the diameter in millimetres, often with the grade: 12 mm Fe 500D, or simply 12φ.

IS 1786 covers strength grades Fe 415, Fe 500, Fe 550 and Fe 600, where the number is the minimum 0.2% proof stress in N/mm². The D grades, such as Fe 500D, have higher ductility and are the usual choice in seismic zones.

To estimate steel, multiply the total length of each bar size by its mass per metre, then add laps, hooks and a wastage allowance before ordering. Masses on a schedule are nominal; the bars delivered can come in slightly over or under.

The same chart for other standards: BS 4449, AS/NZS 4671 and ASTM A615.

S-04/QUESTIONS5

A 12 mm bar has a nominal mass of 0.888 kg per metre. A 12 m length weighs 10.66 kg.

About 634 m. A 16 mm bar weighs 1.578 kg/m, so one tonne is 1,000 ÷ 1.578 metres.

Mass in kg per metre = d² ÷ 162, where d is the bar diameter in millimetres. It is the bar's cross-sectional area multiplied by the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³. For a 16 mm bar: 16² ÷ 162 = 1.58 kg/m. Multiply by the total length of bars to get the weight.

They are nominal masses calculated from each bar's nominal diameter at 7,850 kg/m³, which is how nominal mass is derived. Printed tables can differ in the third decimal place because of rounding. Delivered bars vary within the rolling tolerance the standard allows, so check the mill certificate for actual weights.

Both have a minimum 0.2% proof stress of 500 N/mm². The D grade has tighter chemistry and higher elongation, so it bends further before breaking, which is why it is preferred in earthquake-prone areas. Nominal mass is the same, so the weights on this page apply to both.

Need the full bar bending schedule?

A weight chart gives you the steel for one bar. A schedule needs every bar on the drawings: shapes, cutting lengths, laps and the totals by size. Send the reinforcement drawings and we return the BBS in Excel, checked and signed off by an engineer.
